PROJECT

METROpolitan CollaAborative Strategies and comparative Enhancements– Metro Case”

The “Metro Case” project is financed by Interreg Program of European Union aims to improve the policies and tools for strategic planning of large urban cities and metropolises by strengthening multi-sector coordination and multi-level cooperation between capital cities and their surrounding areas.

Developing a joint vision for the governance of large urban cities and metropolises, identifying appropriate forms and themes of cooperation, and improving existing tools and policies for strategic planning are essential for addressing challenges and promoting comprehensive, integrated territorial development strategies that meet the needs of citizens and communities. This will support the programming of activities and the allocation of funding toward initiatives that foster a holistic approach to the development of major urban areas.

The “Metro Case” project emphasizes a horizontal approach to citizen participation in the creation of integrated strategies that promote innovative and sustainable urban development, with a special focus on improving environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

The City of Skopje is a partner in the “Metro Case” project consortium and, within the project activities, will align its Local Environmental Action Plan – LEAP with international strategic standards. LEAP represents the highest local strategic document for environmental protection, planning, and management. Through the revision of LEAP 3 (2020–2026), a coordinated approach and cooperation between the capital city and its surrounding areas will be ensured, enabling Skopje to more effectively address key environmental challenges and achieve significant impacts across a wider territory. The City of Skopje will draw knowledge, best practices, and proven mechanisms from other project partners for establishing a coordination body in the creation of LEAP 4. The alignment of LEAP 4 with the Territorial Agenda 2030 and the New Leipzig Charter further highlights Skopje’s commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive urban development.
