Twinning and Engagement in net-zero tRanport tRAnsItioN

Acronym: TERRAIN

Project Title: Twinning and Engagement in net-zero tRanport tRAnsItioN

Duration: 36 months (1/9/2024 – 31/8/2027)

The TERRAIN project is funded by the Interreg IPA Adrion 2021-2027 Programme (https://www.interreg-ipa-adrion.eu/), which focuses on fostering economic development and cooperation within the Adriatic-Ionian Macro-region. Centered around experience sharing and co-design, the project aims to guide and support cities in their transition towards sustainable, smart urban mobility. Led by the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas/Hellenic Institute of Transport (CERTH/HIT) as the project’s horizontal mentor, nine cities from the programme’s area will engage in a three-year collaboration to exchange knowledge and experiences, assisting them in creating zero-emission mobility solutions in line with EU guidelines. The partnership includes four cities from the EU-funded ERDF countries (Ioannina - Greece, Bologna - Italy, Ljubljana - Slovenia, Zagreb - Croatia) and five major cities from IPA countries (Sarajevo - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Berane - Montenegro, Pančevo - Serbia, Skopje - North Macedonia, Durrës - Albania), with the goal of achieving significant benefits for all participants.

As part of the project, living labs will be established in each participating area, where members will jointly analyze, decide, implement, and monitor pilot actions promoting sustainable mobility. The ERDF cities will serve as mentors for the IPA cities, conducting on-site inspections, suggesting measures and interventions, and assisting them in their transition towards zero-carbon transportation. The mentoring roles are as follows:

  • Ioannina will guide the transition to electromobility.
  • Bologna will mentor integrated public transport.
  • Zagreb will focus on shared and active mobility (walking, cycling).
  • Ljubljana will lead on smart and digital mobility.
  • CERTH/HIT will provide horizontal mentoring on governance, co-design in the transport sector, and policy development.

Project Objectives:

  • Promoting sustainable mobility solutions to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and uncontrolled movement by motorized mean.
  • Creating Living Labs for co-design of sustainable mobility measures.
  • Promoting transnational cooperation in the field of sustainable transport.
  • Implementing pilot actions that will help cities transition to a more sustainable and climate-neutral transport future.
  • Promoting innovation and applying smart technologies in sustainable mobility.
  • Creating a "TERRAIN" center of excellence that will act as a collaboration platform for knowledge exchange on sustainable mobility in the Adriatic-Ionian Macro-Region.
